August 17, 2011 - Locked Bin/Console Service Expands to Grayling and Boyne City
We are excited to announce that we are expanding our locked bin and console service to Grayling and Boyne City. You can save time, money, and hassle with our secure containers which we switch out every 4 or 8 weeks, depending on your schedule.
We always send 1 or 2 employees with our driver so that your material is never alone with one person. In addition, our drivers do not ahve keys and they make sure you lock the bin before they tak eit. Your material is kept locked from the time it leaves your office until it is shredded.
For a limited time we are offering special deals to new customers in Grayling and Boyne City who want to become part of our locked bin/console program. Contact us by October 1, 2011 for more details.

May 9, 2011 - First-Ever Free Residential Shred Day a Success!
On Saturday, May 7, Crossroads Secure Shred hosted its first-ever Free Residential Shred Day. Participants were allowed to bring up to five file boxes full of paper to be shredded for free. Many stayed to watch their documents be shredded and find out more about what exactly we do here at Crossroads Industries.
The weather was beautiful and the turn-out was great. Fifty-five cars dropped off over 3300 pounds of paper. Thanks to everyone who made the day a success!

February 17, 2011 - Free Recycling Program, Cancelled
Today we are cancelling our free recycling program that started a month ago, due to concerns about security of confidential information. The recycling program started when our secure shredding department obtained a baler earlier in the year. The shredding department began using the baler to bale shredded paper from its customers (this service costs 13 cents per pound). In addition, we presented the option to the community to drop off paper that did not need to be shredded and we would recycle it for free.
Not long after we began accepting office paper from the public, a business dropped off a number of boxes of insurance papers to be recycled - not shredded. As soon as we realized that the papers contained personal information of the business' customers, we immediately shredded the entire load even though we had been instructed just to recycle them.
This incident made us re-evaluate our free recycling program and the consequences that could result from accepting office paper without shredding it. We take the security of the documents that we shred very seriously. We cannot force people to pay for shredding if we also offer a free recycling option, and we do not want to be responsible for confidential information that is dropped off for free.
We will continue to recycle everything that we shred; however, from now on we will only accept office paper if it is to be shredded before recycling. For information about free paper recycling options in the area, you can call the Otsego Conservation District at (989) 732-4021.
We will continue to accept cardboard and magazines to be recycled for free. If you have any questions about Crossroads Secure Shred or the cancelling of our free recycle program at Crossroads, you can call Jessica Kane at (989) 732-1233
January 17, 2011 - OWLS Helps Crossroads' Shredding Program to Obtain a Baler
Crossroads Secure Shred has received another $2,000 towards the refurbished paper baler it recently purchased. The money comes from the Otsego Wildlife Legacy Society (OWLS) which recognizes the importance of recycling office paper for the conservation of natural resources.

December 1, 2010 - Great Lakes Energy People Fund Donates $2,000 to Crossroads
Crossroads' secure shredding department has received a grant of $2,000 from the Great Lakes Energy People Fund. The money will go towards the purchase of a paper baler. The baler will allow Crossroads Secure Shred to expand its paper recycling program, ensuring that all shredded paper is recycled in the most cost-efficient and energy-efficient manner.

Shredding: It's the Law
A number of federal and state laws protect customer privacy and require proper disposal of confidential information. Failure to comply with these regulations can result in steep fines for your organization.
Below are a few of the most prevalent laws regulating the retainment and destruction of personal information. This is not meant to be an all-inclusive list.
MICHIGAN LAW
→ The Identity Theft Protection Act requires the destruction of any discarded personal information.
→ The Social Security Number Privacy Act requires that any individual or company who obtains social security numbers must have a privacy policy that includes the proper disposal of documents that contain those numbers.
FEDERAL LAW
→ The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) applies to all organizations that collect health-related information. The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH) amended HIPPA, strengthening requirements and penalties. It was part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and became fully effective in February 2010.
→ The Gramm/Leach/Bliley Act applies to all financial institutions.
→ The brand new Red Flags Rule applies to financial institutions and creditors
→ The Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA) requires the destruction of all consumer information before it is discarded.

Security
We ensure that your confidential documents are destroyed in a secure manner.
24/7 security throughout the building
Documents are stored in locked bins or in a secure area until they are destroyed.
Documents are shredded into 5/16 inch strips, the size that the IRS requires for its own confidential documents.
Shredded paper is mixed with shreds from multiple customers, ensuring that the pieces will be impossible to put back together.
All shredded paper is recycled and pulped in the U.S. which ensures the confidential information will never be recovered.
To find out about other recycling opportunities in our area, contact the Otsego Conservation District at 989-732-4021.
Why Hire Us?
→ Save money. An office with just a few employees can generate over 100 lbs. of paper every month. Paying someone $8.50/hr. to shred that paper can cost over $100 per month. When you destroy everything you should, it is much cheaper to pay someone else to shred than to do it yourself.
→ You don't have to commit. Unlike many shredding companies, we do not require you to sign up for our locked bin/console service for a year, or even six months. If you don't like the service we provide, fire us!
→ Verifiable record of compliance with legal requirements. Hiring an outside shredder is cheap insurance.
→ External Security. Shredded material from an office shredder is relatively easy to put back together, especially if small volumes are thrown into the dumpster together. These shredded pieces will just show dumpster divers what to take.
→ Internal Security. Who is handling sensitive material at your office? If you have entry-level employees doing your shredding, they may see something they weren't meant to. And do you really want to pay top dollar for management to shred?
